Porches

On this page you will find all manner of information regarding Ornate Designs porches from information on planning to the types of roofing materials used.

Planning Permission

The planning rules for porches are applicable to any external door to the dwelling house.

You need to apply for planning permission when:

The ground floor area (measured externally) would exceed three square metres .

Any part would be more than three metres above ground level (height needs to be measured in the same way as for a house extension).

Any part of the porch would be within two metres of any boundary of the dwelling house and the highway.

Installation

Installation time is usually one day in most cases but depending on your position in the country it can take up to two days.

Although you can install our porches yourself we highly recommend you let us do this for you, thus to ensure you get the best possible result for your finished porch.

Porch designs & specifications

Before you buy one of our porches a member of our design team will need to make a short site visit to your property. Whether you use our porches for your front door or garden door I'm sure you will be happy that you chose a door canopy from Ornate Designs.

Roofing materials

As a standard we use grey natural slate as the roof finish but we can also provide roof finishes in lead, zinc and also toughened glass much similar to our verandas. Again we believe our porches should be built to last so all wood used for tile laying is treated and weather proofed making it similar to that used in the marine industry, after this weather proofing we lay a felting sheet to tightly seal the roof before any tiles are finally laid .

Concrete footings

Footings are made at the beginning of the installation even though only small they are more the substantial enough to provide a lasting foothold for your porch.
Roof flashing

All porch to wall flashing are made good using lead in either a step flashing or linear depending on your brick/stonework or rendered wall.

Framework

We use mild steel to produce the decorative frames for our porches, the reason behind this is we would like to think that our porches are built to last a lifetime and not rot in the great English weather after a few years like some cheaper wooden porches. Every frame we build is made by hand and great care and effort is taken into making porches of an excellent standard.

Paints & finishes

After the frames are finished at the fabrication shop they are then taken to be powder coated where a range of colours can be applied, to see a small selection of colours please click here. The powder coating process is very simple but also very crucial to maintaining a lasting finish on our porches. First we apply a zinc undercoat which helps to protect from rust and also acts as a primer, after this comes the powder coating which is believed to be one of the best lasting finished available for steel.
